All I Half Left

Normally the sweet-earthy scent of dew moist leaves beings me a peace and inner joy that tease forth a cocky smile and wide-spread arms.

But not today.

The ceaseless rain erases the heady smell and the riot of autumn’s promise. I pull my thin poly-whatever jacket tighter to my chest with stiff, frigid hands as the leaves above act like gatekeepers to the torrential downpour. A lone droplet finds purchase and snakes its way down the back of my neck chilling already heat-depraved skin.

I shudder.

I don’t dare open my arms to move the plastered hair away – it would only be an invitation… one I will grant no more.

For on those glorious fall days a whisper drifted in on the tantalizing breeze – one of promises not kept and secrets only half-shared… or half-lies, but it matters not anymore. Still, half a curse roots wooden feet in the mud and constricts my arms over and under, through and across a hollow chest.

It is here where I must remain until the passing of the storm – reminded that half a life is better than none at all.
